Best Stretch for Hunched Over Computer Users (and everyone else)

So much body dysfunction originates from poor posture. Hunching over a computer constantly as well as general aging exasperates what is already a common phenomenon. Many of us don’t stand up straight. Stand against a wall with your feet nearly touching. Keep your chin level. Engage your core. Your body should touch at the back of your head, your shoulders, and your buttocks with a very slight arch in your back. Step away from the mirror and, there you go, you have perfect posture. See how hard it is to stand that upright in your daily life. In The Glitter and the Gold: The American Duchess Consuelo Vanderbilt Balsan she talks about her childhood in the 1890’s when good posture was not an option. While doing her school lessons, she was required to wear “…a steel rod which ran down my spine and was strapped at my waist and over my shoulders – another strap went around my forehead to the rod.” Maybe we need to reinvent something to keep us more upright while we sit at our computers! In any case, a great exercise to counteract the hunch is the cobra. See the link below describing why it might just be the best stretch you can perform. (Word of warning. Cobra is an advanced yoga pose and needs to be performed correctly and one gradually works up to this full hyperextention of the back.)
