I’m an athlete, more so now, later in life. No, I don’t do anything amazing like running marathons. I’m just really fit. It wasn’t always that way. Born pre-Title Nine, there were no sports for girls. I grew up smoking with friends at the mall. In my 30’s I quit smoking and began working out. I ran, lifted weights, and was physically active.
In middle age, working full-time, raising kids, I didn’t make time for exercise or self-care. I gained weight and began experiencing body pain and dysfunction. I wanted to change, but where to start? Deciding to never diet again, I decided to eat healthy food mostly and to commit to exercise, no matter the duration or type, at least 5 days a week, making it the most important thing I did each day. I lost weight. My pain and physical limitations disappeared. By the time I retired from teaching third grade, I was fitter and healthier. The kids had left home. After retirement, I decided to become a Personal Trainer to share the joy of transforming oneself, even well into middle age.
In the same way that I have evolved improving my physical health, I’ve been on a life-long journey exploring mental and spiritual well being, as well. Currently, breaking age-related barriers and stereotypes is top on my list. I see this as necessary for opening up possibilities for all of us as we age.
